Colosseo and Our Last Day in Rome

It's hard to believe that today is our last day in Rome. We’ve hit everything on our list of things to do.  We started off early and grabbed an Uber to get to the Colloseum when it opened at 8:30am. I can’t believe we are  here!!!
We walked all over the Colloseum and checked out what it used to look like with the models. Pretty amazing that so much of it is still standing considering this place is 2,000 years old!

After our first outing we hit a local place for a light breakfast and just glanced out the window to notice that this could be the view of a restaraunt in Rome. Crazy huh?
The light breakfast held us over for a tour of a local museum where Monet’s paintings were on display. It was a great exhibit and Katie was in heaven since he is her favorite painter. She was excited but the rest of us had a pretty good time as well - despite Emily and me wandering off and getting separated from the group...40 minutes later we were all together again! So many paintings!!!

We learned a lot about Monet and his love of his garden. Many of his landscape patinings were actually inspired from his own house. I thought this quote was quite fitting.

We began our slow one mile walk home, and stopped off at numerous stores for things that we didn’t need but wanted. This store had a fitting sign and thus became my Instagram photo of the day.

We stopped by a local grocery store and grabbed another Barbera to see if this Italian stuff is as good as what we have back home. The early lunch of bread, cheese, prosciutto and wine back at the house was loud and filling and resulted in us declaring that this bottle for 6.5 euros was perhaps the best we’ve had since we’ve been here. I may have been the only judge but my taste is pretty good. Half a bottle before dinner and I was thinking this was going to be an early night....but alas, Grandma and Papa decided to stay in so we grabbed them take away (that’s what everyone calls “to go” food here), and then we slipped out for the evening with a Rachelle and Adrianna.

Our last night in Rome, and we went out past 8pm! Guys it’s 10:30 and I’m home now writing the blog. It’s no wonder I was married and settled at 20 right? I’ve been old since I was a teenager. Anyway, off we went and strolling through town. Checking out little streets, stopping for gelato. Walking into random churches we stumbled across and finally seeing the inside of the Pantheon! That was cool. Oldest church in Rome? Heck yes!

Walking along until we found the Spanish Steps and snapping a few selfies with all the festive decorations.

Then walking through the square to get back to Trevi Fountain so we could see it lit up at night. Beautiful. Someone told me it’s good luck to drink out of the fountain so I jumped down there and scooped my hand in. That wasn’t quite what they meant, but I’m hoping the large amount of water dilutes whatever might have made me sick in there. It’s all an experience as Grandma would say!

After we left Trevi Fountain we found a little place to eat dinner and plopped ourselves down. We had a delightful dinner, a bottle of wine, great conversation, and a general relaxing time. Ah, why do we have to work?

The kids woke up from their “nap” and told us they were hungry but we replied that we were off partying it up and that hopefully Grandma and papa would assist them in the purchase of some food from the restaurant below. Crazy to think that these 17 year old girls could be here in a year, without us, and be like, BY THEMSELVES. Ugh, kills me to think about it. Oh we want them to travel and experience the world a million times over, but you know. They are our babies. They’re my babies. This trip is like an early graduation present as they both will graduate high school this spring and head off to college. It’s hard to believe we’ve been raising babies for 18 years. The time goes quickly. If yours are young, cherish the time. Write blogs when you vacation. Take videos. Keep a record. Night y’all.
